SIOUX (Intelligent system for dynamic online quality control of spot welding processes for cross-sectoral applications) is a two year EU-project that aims at developing advanced and intelligent control methods for industrial resistance spot welding quality control. Resistance spot welding is used to join two metal sheets together, for example in the automobile industry. Something of the popularity of the method tells for example the fact that in Europe alone more than 100 million spot welding joints are made daily.
The quality of the welding joints can be monitored for example using destructive or ultrasound testing. These type of methods are relatively expensive or difficult to implement. In SIOUX a real time system based on soft computing methods combined with an active process control of resistance spot welding is being developed. The aim of the system is to replace the time and cost intensive destructive tests by using computational quality estimation without additional sensors.
In Intelligent Systems Group we are building a dynamic database containing measurements from welding tests and developing data mining methods for analyzing the measurement data to achieve better welding quality. The system is an application example of one of our research topics – smart archive. Smart archive is a system combining expertise in databases and data mining methods. The aim of it is to implement and bring this know-how to processes demanding adaptive, continuous and largely autonomous supervision.
