Research
Four research groups
The research is carried out in four closely co-operating groups: Center for Machine Vision Research, MediaTeam Oulu, Intelligent Systems Group and Biomedical Engineering Research Group. All four are full or associate member groups of the Infotech Oulu in period 2010-2013.
Focus areas
Department of CSE is focusing on research themes in information technology, nominated in the strategy of the University of Oulu as one of the core expertise areas.
The detailed focus areas of research at the Dept. of CSE are:
Intelligent information analysis: biosignal analysis, data mining, pattern recognition, machine learning
Machine vision: computer vision methods, methods and systems for human-centered computing, robot vision
Information security: OUSPG, digital watermarking, biometrics
Ubiquitous Internet: mobile computing, services, human-computer interaction
On basis of the above mentioned, the Dept. of CSE creates applications and new technologies for e.g. information technology for health and well-being, human-machine interaction, embedded systems, nomadic robots and cooperating robots, industrial automation and intelligent living environments.
World-class research
Several external peer-reviews and evaluations show that the research carried out at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering is very high level or even world-class.
The University of Oulu went through a Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2007. The research in machine vision was noticed with distinction.
In the latest Infotech Oulu Call for Research Groups, the research groups of the Dept. of CSE received all excellent or very good grades from the international evaluation committee.
Oulu University Secure Programming Group (OUSPG) serves as a renowned initiator and expert in the software and information security domain.
Multidisciplinary research is best presented currently in MediaTeam Oulu's UBI (UrBan Interactions) Research Program.
The research themes are all promoted with external funding from sources such as the Academy of Finland, Finnish Agency for Technology and Innovation (Tekes), European Union's FP's and regional development funds. In addition, the Dept. of CSE has references in contract research. The research budget for year 2011 is over four million euros.
Partners and references
The Department of CSE has a wide domestic and global network of partners both in academic, industrial and governmental sectors. Our current projects give an insight into the research themes our staff is involved in. Our publications represent the results of our research. Please see also our open source software.
