Welcome to the crest of computer science and engineering

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is responsible for Bachelor, Master and PhD level education in digital signal processing, intelligent systems, information networks and mobile applications, and embedded systems and software engineering in Northern Finland.

Looking for a basic degree? Choose our Bachelor and Masters Studies

Degree Programme in Computer Science and Engineering (in Finnish tietotekniikan koulutusohjelma) will equip you well for resolving the challenges in the field of computer science and engineering. Did you know that our Computer Science and Engineering graduates work in various tasks, not just as software designers.

Further information on admission is available in the ABI-opas (in Finnish). Currently majority of the Bachelor and Master level materials and readings are available in English. Some courses are taught also in English.

Interested in math? We definitely recommend you to choose largest amount of courses in math at the high school. Ready programming skills will help you in your University studies a lot, but are not necessary - you can learn to program also at us.

Interested in joining the staff?

For students already in the end of their Bachelor or Master studies we offer traineeships and Master thesis assignments. Your background can be in engineering, computer science, natural sciences or mathematical sciences, and occasionally in even in other fields.

Deepen your knowledge with our PhD Studies

After completing your Master's, one considerable career option for talented, independent-minded individuals is to continue to pursue the PhD degree in computer science and engineering. Science is fascinating - new knowledge is produced to further development in the science community and in the long run to be used by the societies as a whole.

As a researcher you have a global audience. Your publications are at best released in the most respected forums - conferences and journals. Conferences are spread all over the globe, so you might well find yourself to be traveling to almost all continents.

Get acquainted with a researcher's work profile

The research at the Dept. of CSE is carried out in four groups: Center for Machine Vision Research, MediaTeam Oulu, Intelligent Systems Group and Biomedical Engineering Research Group. All four are full or associate member groups of the Infotech Oulu in period 2010-2013. Infotech Oulu has its own doctoral program with currently 25 PhD student positions funded by the Finnish Ministry of Education. In addition, a national Graduate School in Electronics, Telecommunications and Automation (GETA) exists.
